General overview :

Val d’Aran by UTMB® Challenge is the test for the toughest runners and a unique way to challenge yourself and see if you are able to face the 3 most emblematic climbs of the VDA race. This challenge encourages you to compete with a global community of trail runners, to reach the ultimate goal of 19km and 3,000 meters of elevation gain or 49 km-effort over several runs or in one go (click here to see the definition of a km-effort).

Those who can travel and want to participate in the challenge on the trails of Val d’Aran are more than welcome to come and visit the region.

Why 49km effort ? Because it is the combination of the 3 most symbolic climbs of the VDA course
  • 1.Ascent to Tuc dera Escaleta (from km 30 to km 35 of VDA, 5km and 1000m D+): 15km effort

It is the first challenging ascent of the course and runners would normally deal with it on the very first night of racing. The area was known as a zone for smuggling during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, since it connects Val d’Aran to France and Valle de Benasque, in the neighbouring region of Aragon.
Races that feature this ascent: VDA

  • 2.Ascent to Còth de Uèrri (from km 70 to km 80 of VDA, 10km and 1.300m D+) : 23km effort

An ascent in the middle of nowhere that takes you from the wild valley of Toran and its green forest to the alpine meadows of Liat, featuring abandoned zinc mines.Races that feature this ascent: VDA, CDH

  • 3.Ascent to Còth de Coriedo (from km 146 to km 150 of VDA, 4km and 700m D+) : 11km effort

The last challenging ascent, known for its toughness and for being the final touch to a demanding race in the heart of the Pyrenees.
