Val d’Aran by UTMB® Challenge is the test for the toughest runners and a unique way to challenge yourself and see if you are able to face the 3 most emblematic climbs of the VDA race. This challenge encourages you to compete with a global community of trail runners, to reach the ultimate goal of 19km and 3,000 meters of elevation gain or 49 km-effort over several runs or in one go (click here to see the definition of a km-effort).
Those who can travel and want to participate in the challenge on the trails of Val d’Aran are more than welcome to come and visit the region.Why 49km effort ? Because it is the combination of the 3 most symbolic climbs of the VDA course
1.Ascent to Tuc dera Escaleta (from km 30 to km 35 of VDA, 5km and 1000m D+): 15km effort
It is the first challenging ascent of the course and runners would normally deal with it on the very first night of racing. The area was known as a zone for smuggling during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, since it connects Val d’Aran to France and Valle de Benasque, in the neighbouring region of Aragon.

2.Ascent to Còth de Uèrri (from km 70 to km 80 of VDA, 10km and 1.300m D+) : 23km effort
An ascent in the middle of nowhere that takes you from the wild valley of Toran and its green forest to the alpine meadows of Liat, featuring abandoned zinc mines.Races that feature this ascent: VDA, CDH

3.Ascent to Còth de Coriedo (from km 146 to km 150 of VDA, 4km and 700m D+) : 11km effort
The last challenging ascent, known for its toughness and for being the final touch to a demanding race in the heart of the Pyrenees.

Every runner who completes the challenge, will also be entered into a special lottery to gain entry into the distance of their choice at Val d’Aran by UTMB®2021, with one place available in the woman category and one place available in the men category. If the winners of the lottery have already registered for Val d’Aran by UTMB® in 2021, they will be refunded the entry fee.

Can you imagine the wild UTMB® of the Pyrenees? Did you know there is a hidden valley between France and Spain? A valley where rivers form hundreds of lakes, where summits touch the sky and where you can be guaranteed a great adventure. Welcome to Val d’Aran by UTMB®, where all the elements will come together and join you during this challenge.
The new trail running event in the heart of the Pyrenees, will take place on July 9th, 10th and 11th 2021. Three courses will wind through our mountains and valleys: Torn dera Val d’Aran – VDA (Val d’Aran Tour), 162km; Camins de Hèr – CDH (Iron Tracks), 105km; and Peades dera Aigua – PDA (Water Footsteps), 55km.
The Trail Festival Baqueira Beret will also take place during the weekend, a trail running event for families and open to everyone, with races up to 15km (SKY Baqueira Beret) dedicated to the youngest participants.
- To become a Finisher:You must run 19 km with 3000 meters of elevation gain or the equivalent of 49 Kilometer-effort. Kilometer-effort means that for any gain of 100m in elevation, one kilometer is added to the distance of the route.
- The Challenge must be completed: By walking/running
- The Challenge can be completed : Over several runs or in one go.
- Time slot : 14 days (from july 27th to August 10th)
The challenge has no ranking. Runners will be ranked according to the % of progress of their challenge and the registration date.
Every runner who completes the VAL D’ARAN by UTMB® Challenge will be entered into a special draw to gain entry into one of the races of the 2021 VAL d’ARAN by UTMB® with two places available (1 man and 1 woman). If the winners of the lottery have already registered for Val d’Aran by UTMB® in 2021, they will be refunded the entry fee.. The winners will in any case need to have their up to date qualifying points to take the start of this race.
- You are responsible: For your own race and GPS / tracking system.
- All runners participate under their own responsibility: Physical activity requires good training and all participants declare that they are healthy and fit for the challenge
